US Men’s National Team celebrates qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The US Men’s National Team has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar for the first time since 2014.

The Men’s Team did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Their last run in the tournament was in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which ended in the Round of 16 with a 2-1 loss to Belgium.

Unlike the Women’s National Team, the Men’s Team has not been an international powerhouse when compared to other countries like England, Germany, or Mexico in recent years. The team qualified after a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica on Wednesday, March 30. They needed to avoid losing by 6 goals to secure a spot alongside Canada and Mexico. They technically tied for 3rd place with Costa Rica, but clinched the spot thanks to a goal differential of +11 compared to Costa Rica’s +5.

“It’s amazing what this group of guys have been able to do over these last seven months,” said head coach Gregg Berhalter after the team qualified. “I’ve really seen the team grow and this is a great accomplishment. We are looking forward to the World Cup.”

With the US, Canada, and Mexico all qualifying, three more spots in the tournament still need to be filled. The remaining playoff games will be hosted in Qatar in June.

After qualifying, the US was drawn into a group with England, Iran, and either Wales or the winner of the Scotland-Ukraine match in June. This group is where they will play their initial matches to determine if they get placed in the elimination bracket.

Now that the US has qualified for the tournament, they are one step closer to their ultimate goal: winning their first-ever FIFA World Cup.

“I think at this point, I wouldn’t say (qualifying is) the ultimate goal, I think the ultimate goal is obviously to win a World Cup,” right-back DeAndre Yedlin said. “But there’s steps you have to take to get there and one of the huge steps is to qualify for World Cup.”
