Tom Holland’s beloved portrayal of Spider-Man will no longer be featured in the MCU after Sony and Disney failed to reach a new financial deal for future movies featuring the character.

“For the moment the door is closed” said Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra.

News broke on Aug. 20 that Marvel’s parent company, Disney, and Sony had failed to negotiate a new financial deal. As a result, Sony now has full rights to Holland’s character.

The previous deal allowed for Holland’s Spider-Man to feature in Marvel’s blockbusters that featured several other Marvel characters. Now that Sony has withdrawn from the deal Spider-Man will no longer be featured in the massive MCU.

Holland reassured fans that he will continue to play the character in Sony’s films and that he is optimistic for the future of Spider-Man under Sony.

The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler” said Holland.

Disney reportedly asked for a 50/50 financial deal after der-Man: Far From Home” reached $1 billion at the box office. The previous deal reportedly gave Disney an estimated 5 percent first-dollar gross and all merchandising revenues.

“Avengers: Endgame” Director Anthony Russo also commented on the difficulty of getting a deal with Sony in the first place and that they are not surprised it finally fell through.

“Joe and I are not so devastated or surprised that there’s been a falling-out, because it was so hard to make it happen in the first place” said Russo.

Sony has already begun production on sequels to “Venom” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” as well as a rumored “Sinister Six” movie starring several Spider-Man villains. Holland could star in these films.
